Under direction, the incumbent serves as the engineering liaison officer for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Makerspace Lab, using skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort to provide development, administrative, and operational support to several undergraduate laboratories designed to provide "hands-on" experience through a series of structured projects. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. The incumbent will demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
The incumbent will collaborate with professors, offering expertise and recommendations in devising interrelated experiments that teach fundamentals of circuit design, signal processing, mechanical design, robotics, and system design using a combination of platforms including microprocessors with add-on I/O capabilities. The incumbent will be responsible for developing educational projects, keeping the lab projects up-to-date and administrative tasks related to lab operations. These tasks include maintaining inventory of parts and establishing a check-out system for more expensive parts and equipment, including mechanical components, motors, sensors, power supplies, function generators, scopes, logic analyzers, etc. The incumbent will also troubleshoot equipment, sending damaged equipment off to repair and teach basic equipment functionality to students and other users.
The incumbent will manage other users of the lab, including interns and students, and coordinate their efforts in the construction, assembly and testing of experimental labs as well as ensure that all users have had relevant safety training.
Materials and Metallurgy experience and knowledge. Knowledge of characteristics, machinability & mechanical properties of a wide variety of materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, foam and composites.
Experience in facilitative design and fabrication, working with minimal guidelines, conceptual ideas, rough sketches or oral information about basic design where specific details are developed as fabrication progresses.
Experience in managing a lab facility, including knowledge of project management, staff management, safety requirements and recharge/financial support to keep the facility operating smoothly.
Demonstrated experience with laboratory safety, including a knowledge of mechanical, electrical, mechanical and/or chemical safety procedures.
Demonstrated knowledge and hands on experience of Machine shop practices, CNC machining & 3D printing technology.
Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work. Demonstrated knowledge of theory and design principles of mechanical and electrical circuit design and mechanical prototyping.
Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Graduation from college with major work in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering and three years of engineering experience including one year of responsible design work or an equivalent combination of additional education and experience.
Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
Ability to lead and influence others. Proven ability to supervise work of other engineers, artists and/or students. Desire to work with students, including training and mentoring
