MAKER TECHNICAL SPECIALIST , Innovation Initiative , to aid Project Manus ( https://project-manus.mit.edu/ ) in conceiving, formulating, implementing and improving elements of MIT's makersystem. Will serve as a key contributor to Project Manus' efforts to improve the student and faculty experience, inside and outside of the classroom; and support its contributions to outside activities, including the Make Impact Consortium and the Higher Education Makerspace Initiative. Responsibilities include working with staff, consultants, and MIT EHS to develop fabrication and rapid prototyping curriculums for students/researchers/faculty; aiding in the planning of new campus makerspaces, machine shops, projects spaces, and other design/build spaces; aiding in creating new systems and programs that support making at MIT; supporting the teaching of making at affiliated events/classes; aiding in the development of new courses and materials (write-ups, posters, guides, slides, project handouts, etc.); aiding in researching, assessing, reviewing, testing/setup, and maintenance of fabrication and rapid prototyping equipment; collaborating on creating, deploying, and maintaining new modes of training and making on campus; and other duties as needed.
REQUIRED : B.S. in a fabrication, scientific, or engineering field; strong design and fabrication experience; demonstrated success with safety, teaching and mentoring, fabrication and making, and fostering/supporting community making and projects; expertise with a wide range of fabrication skills, including woodworking, metalworking, CNC milling, turning, waterjet, plastics, casting, forging, 3D printing, composites, painting, metrology, thermoforming, and injection molding; exceptional teaching, mentoring, interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills; ability to work with a broad spectrum of people; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to seek out root causes of issues, conceive innovative solutions, and move from concept to implementation.
